After moving on to some other things, I decided to finally crack open Star Successor and give it a shot.

#SIN AND PUNISHMENT STAR SUCCESSOR SERIES#

So I revisited the first game in the series recently and gave it a play through, and I felt pretty much the same way I did in 2007 - fun, but not amazing. And I always intended on playing it, but like so many things, it sat on a shelf for the better part of a decade waiting to be opened. I ended up seeing it on clearance at EBGames for $1, I think around 2011-2012 or so when the Wii U was on the horizon and the Wii was pretty much done. I ended up buying Sin & Punishment: Star Successor some time not long after it came out - I was aware it existed, but the $60 price tag seemed pretty steep to me and the game wasn't even ubiquitous in stores to start with. The controls felt serviceable, but not fantastic. It's a good looking game and a fun time, but not something I would play again and again, which is important given the game is only a couple hours long. It is a rail shooter, and rather short to boot. I enjoyed it, and I could see why people were fans of it, but it didn't blow my mind. I was and still am a big N64 fan, and I played Sin & Punishment when it came out on VC in 2007. The sequel came out and was widely praised by critics, but it didn't seem to sell all that well - and it ended up being one of the last games Treasure ever made - they put out a Bangai-O sequel for the 360 in 2011 and a game called Gaist Crusher for the 3DS in 2013, and haven't done anything since. The game was announced in 2008 and released in Japan in 2009 and the rest of the world about 6 months later in 2010. It was never a huge seller, but it found its audience.Īfter the success of the VC release of Sin & Punishment, Nintendo got together with Treasure to make a sequel: Star Successor. The VC release was praised, rightfully so - it was a lot of fun even years later, and the import price of the game had shot up over the years so it was nice to see an affordable version on VC at $10. All of the game's UI was in English except for the very simple main menu, so it was an easy release. It was one of if not the first Japanese exclusive games to appear on VC - the reason being that Sin & Punishment actually required almost no translation. The game was unknown to most audiences until it was hyped up for a re-release on Virtual Console in 2007. The game released exclusively in Japan in 2000, and during the late N64 era it was one of the most sought-after Japanese imports (along with Bangai-O, another Treasure game that later released in NA/EU on the Dreamcast). It came from a dream team - developed by Treasure (makers of all-time-great run-and-guns and shmups like Gunstar Heroes, Astro Boy: Omega Factor, Radiant SIlvergun, Ikaruga, and McDonald's Treasure Land Adventure) and published by Nintendo. Sin and Punishment: Star Successor happened to be one of them a couple weeks ago and I can't believe I waited this long to play it - I've been missing out on something great.įor those who aren't aware, the first Sin & Punishment game came out many years ago. With a lot of time on my hands lately, I've been continuing to work my way through my long list of Nintendo games + games I own physically that I've never touched.
